What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel is a clean-burning, environmentally friendly fuel used as an equivalent to conventional petroleum diesel fuel. Biodiesel is made from renewable domestic resources such as canola oil or recycled vegetable oils. Biodiesel offers many benefits over petroleum diesel.

How is biodiesel used?
Biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine in pure form or mixed with petroleum diesel. A mixture of biodiesel and petroleum diesel is called a biodiesel blend. Blends are identified with the letter B followed by the percentage of biodiesel in the mixture. A popular blend is B20 consisting of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel.
Biodiesel Benefits
Engine Life
Biodiesel provides significant lubricity improvement over petroleum diesel. Even biodiesel levels as low as one percent can provide up to a 65 percent increase in lubricity. Increased lubricity significantly reduces engine wear which prolongs engine life and reduces downtime and maintenance costs.
Health & Environment
Air quality is improved due to a reduction in harmful emissions. Reduced emissions are a benefit to both human and environmental health. The figure shows the potential reduction of chemical emissions by using biodiesel. These chemicals contribute to global warming, acid rain and smog. Some of them are poisonous, cause respiratory illness and cancer. A study sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Agriculture concluded biodiesel reduces net carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel.
Fuel Economy
The use of biodiesel blends has been reported to increase overall fuel economy. For instance, the City of Saskatoon found that use of B5 biodiesel blend in buses was able to achieve a 4.3% increase in fuel economy compared to petroleum diesel. Improved fuel economy means less fuel will be consumed leading to cost savings.
Who uses biodiesel?
Thousands of government fleets, businesses, truckers and other consumers use biodiesel including:

Biodiesel is being used in all types of equipment and vehicles. It is used in diverse applications such as transportation, construction, agriculture, heating, marine and mining.
Quality Standards
All biodiesel sold by Biodiesel Manitoba Inc. meets or exceeds prevailing industry standards for biodiesel (ASTM D6751) guaranteeing a high quality product that you can trust.
Equipment Warranties
There are concerns about the risks of voiding equipment warranties by using biodiesel. In fact, the use of biodiesel in diesel engines does not void parts and materials workmanship warranties of any major US engine manufacturer. Engine makers do not warranty fuel - whether that fuel is biodiesel or petroleum diesel fuel. Engine manufacturers warranty the materials and workmanship of their engines, they do not warranty fuel of any kind. Biodiesel meets US and Canadian specifications for use in diesel engines and has received positive statements from many diesel engine manufacturers including:
| Caterpillar
|
Case IH
|
Cummins
|
DaimlerChrysler

Storage
Biodiesel is biodegradable and non-toxic. Since it is less volatile than petroleum diesel it is safer to store, handle and transport. Biodiesel can be stored in your existing infrastructure and if necessary we will work with you to provide custom storage solutions tailored to your needs.
Cost
Depending on market conditions, pure biodiesel may be more expensive than petroleum diesel. However, since most users will use a blended product, they will only see a slight increase in overall cost while taking advantage of the many benefits of biodiesel.
